Mindfulness for Kids!

What is Mindfulness and How Can It Help Your Children?

Mindfulness is present moment awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and sensations.  Mindfulness is like a pause button for children.  It helps them to create space between an action and a reaction.  When a child’s nervous system is aroused, many things happen in the brain that cause them to react to the stimulus without any thought.  Mindfulness can bring awareness to those sensations in their bodies so they can self regulate before reacting.

As parents or teachers we are constantly asking children to pay attention, however, we have never taught them HOW to pay attention.  Mindfulness is learning how to pay attention.  There are many ways in which we create an environment for children to learn the art of paying attention.  We will focus on breathing, listening, and becoming mindful of our bodies.

Benefits from practicing mindfulness can simply be paying attention, or increased focus, as well as self regulating.  When these three things are present other positive benefits begin to manifest.  An environment where one is able to pay attention and focus is an environment suitable for learning, and recalling information as well conflict resolution.  These are skills that we expect from our children yet often times are not taught.
