Getting to know Angelica
Angelica’s interest in counseling first stemmed from watching her mom’s nursing career. For 26 years, her mom cared for babies and adults who were unable to care for themselves. Angelica learned from her that everyone has value and is worth being cared for. Her older sister and brother-in-law, who both worked in customer service, modeled for her that connections are the most important commodity one can have in life. As a result, she was interested in people and the decisions that led to their life’s story.
In college, she took her first psychology class where she was elated to discover the different motivators for decision making. People are beautiful and multi-faceted, not black and white as she once suspected. She became involved in mentoring people of all ages as a volunteer in after-school tutoring programs for elementary school-age kids, as a youth minister to teenagers and their families, and as a young adult mentor at the Baptist Student Ministry.
Angelica completed her undergraduate degree at Houston Baptist University (go Huskies!) where she double majored in Christianity and psychology. As she pursued her masters, Angelica became interested and enjoyed her social, artistic and conventional jobs including part-time work at different coffee shops through the Houston inner city. She eventually learned to perfect the latte art heart! She graduated with a Master of Arts in Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy at the Houston Graduate School of Theology (HGST). She is currently pursuing her doctorate in professional counseling specializing in trauma, grief, and loss at HGST as well.
Approach and Style
Angelica is trauma-informed, multi-culturally trained, and works with everyone across all faiths. Her approach to therapy is Person-Centered and Solution-Focused. Her core values in therapy are empowerment, affirming the client’s expertise, and listening with a nonjudgmental ear.
Her favorite quote is by the fictional character Amy Santiago-Peralta from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Life is unpredictable. Not everything is in our control but as long as [you’re] with the right people, [you] can handle anything.” Angelica appreciates a nice cup of coffee, playing with her cats, and watching movies, particularly all things Star Trek.
