Family Therapy

Family therapy seeks to reduce conflict and stress by incorporating new systems of interaction between family members. Our family therapists may work with all family members who are affected by the problem. While it is better if all are in the same room, this is not always possible, and so the therapist may work with each member individually.

Family counselors view problems as patterns of communication between people that need adjusting. This is unlike other forms of therapy that view problems as internal to the person.

Why seek family therapy

Strong family relationships help support the mental health of each family member, whether a blood relation or not. Often it is needed when one family member is struggling with an addiction, medical condition, or another mental health diagnosis. The remaining family members may need assistance in adjusting to the current reality and to provide a supportive environment for those with a problem.

Common reasons for seeking family counseling

  • A child has problems at school
  • A child has an eating disorder
  • A child has a substance abuse problem
  • The family has experienced a major trauma  (e.g. natural disaster, incarceration of a family member, job loss, relocation)
  • Unexpected or traumatic loss of a family member
  • Adjustment to a new family member in the home (i.e. birth of a sibling, adoption, foster children, a grandparent entering the home)
  • Domestic violence
  • Divorce
  • Parental Conflict
  • Strengthen your family with counseling

Family therapy is a very specialized skill set, and one should seek a nearby therapist who has received both training and credentials qualifying them to perform this type of counseling. All LMFTs or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are required to do family counseling as part of their training. Our family therapists will work with you and your family to develop and maintain healthy boundaries, foster stronger communication, promote problem-solving, and build empathy and understanding. Ultimately, all of this will reduce family conflict and create a stronger family unit.
