Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) And Family DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of therapy proven by scientific evidence to make a significant impact in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Mood Disorders, and Addictions. We provide DBT therapy, through certified therapists, primarily to adolescents and their families in Austin as an effective way to address:
• difficulties in interpersonal relationships (inside and outside the family)
•problems with impulse or behavioral control (including addiction and self harming behaviors)
•distorted thinking making it difficult to respond effectively to stressful problems
Dialectical Behavior Therapy sees emotional problems for adolescents as coming from a combination of innate hyper sensitivity from birth onward, complicated by an environment which for whatever reason brings a child to feel that their thoughts and feelings are invalid and their efforts to solve life’s problems are ineffective. These kids can come to feel not only that their problems are more intense than others but also that they are less well equipped and able to handle them. The resulting overwhelm can produce children who are sometimes described as “overwhelmed and flailing” in their lives.
DBT supports those who struggle with the intense emotions and frustrations of this state with regular individual therapy to help identify areas where increased ability to control emotions and think in problem solving terms are helpful. In addition, training in over 100 different skills in the areas of mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness are taught, both individually and in groups. Many of these skills teach direct techniques for controlling emotion and distress, for increasing awareness of ones own feelings, thoughts and needs, and for more effective interaction with others.
A special enhancement to DBT individual treatment is the offering of DBT Family Therapy. In this setting, skills are taught to the entire family to enhance each individuals’ effectiveness in the world and in the family, and to produce a cohesive family culture of skilled behavior which is is highly supportive to the patient. Also a section of each session is spent in consultation and work towards real problems as they exist within the family and how they might best be resolved utilizing DBT skills.
