As your integrative health nutrition coach, some of the services Ami provides are as follows:
More About Ami…
Ami is a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. She believes in a holistic approach to health and wellness. In layman terms, this means she coaches others to make more mindful choices in order to live their best, healthiest lives. She’s also pretty darn good at motivating people to make their wellness goals a reality when they are stuck in unhealthy patterns (I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been there before).
She believes that health runs deeper than the food we eat. We all know what we need to do to move toward better health, but most of the time these goals are incredibly hard to stick to, so we quit, go back to comfortable old patterns and feel worse than when we started (and then we beat ourselves up about it!) Does stress cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep and low energy keep you from exercising? There is a lot that feeds us off our plate as well as on it.
She knows this because she lived it. The first 15 years of her career were spent in the Media world as an Account Executive. Long hours, stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, and late nights came with a toll. It doesn’t take long for extra weight, anxiety, and depression to creep in when life gets out of balance.
This is where a holistic approach must be taken. She believes we are all uniquely made, each individual, and one type of diet does not fit all. Consideration is given to why and how individuals are making choices for themselves and what emotions and past experiences could be linked to the behaviors. Together you will develop sustainable strategies to live a vibrant healthy life. Clients will learn self-awareness, and how to make well-informed choices when it comes to their own personal health. Most people underestimate the impact of making small changes.
She didn’t realize the toll her 20s and 30s had taken until she was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in the cervical spine in 2014. There was a loss of feeling down her right arm and extreme pain from pinched nerves radiating from her neck through her shoulder. It hurt to drive and even lift her arm, not great when you are carpooling 3 kiddos around town. When she lost the grip in her right hand she decided to seek help. There were 2 rounds of steroid injections straight into the spinal cavity, that year which provided temporary relief, but wore off. Two different doctors, a neurologist, and an orthopedic surgeon both recommended surgery. A third Spinal surgeons heard her concerns about getting the surgery and suggested she try some physical therapy, (because who isn’t extremely uncomfortable with the idea of spinal surgery?) as one last attempt for her to feel that all options were explored. Something inside her was screaming no to the surgery.
With an undergraduate Bachelor of Science, she started digging deep and connecting some dots. Stress was agitating the condition by never ending muscle tension, putting pressure on the disc. The inflammatory effects of food she ate in her body, the lack of self-care, exhaustion from motherhood, and the lack of exercise all increased her stress level. Somewhere the wheels came off, and a journey to better health began!
Because she desperately wanted to avoid surgery, she looked into books and diets to reduce inflammation, and a miracle happened. For her, simply eliminating food high in excess sugar and gluten was a game changer. More sleep, less stress, scheduling at least one massage a month, studying mindfulness, and lots of prayers and countless other small changes began to add up. While the condition is still technically there for life, she is no longer able to feel it. The feeling returned to her arm and she has regained all the function in that arm. No more shoulder pain. She is amazed that in choosing to following this path of simply paying attention to her health that she was able to avoid surgery and regain complete normalcy.
From 2015-2016, she was trained and certified at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as a Health Coach and is ecstatic to have the chance to share with others that integrative nutrition has the power to heal you. She’s also eager to let her clients in on a little secret…you don’t always have to listen to what the doctor says to do!
When Ami is not health coaching with Lifeworks, she can be found with her husband of 15 years, traveling, exercising and yoga-ing, and spending time outdoors riding her bike around White Rock Lake. She also loves to volunteer in the community, at church, and with her childrens’ schools.
