Let’s get real for just a second. Do you ever stop and wonder to yourself: Who am I? Who do I want to become? What do I really believe in, and where do I want my life to go? These may sound like overwhelming questions, not for Denis. He loves to help people sort out these tough life questions.

Lots of people think that counseling is about just dealing with anxiety or depression symptoms. Denis takes it a step further. “Learning to cope with negative thoughts and emotions is absolutely necessary, but people can still be left feeling somehow incomplete. Just coping doesn’t address the root of any problem, especially where mental health is concerned.”

Denis knows that it can take peeling back a person’s layers to better understand what is causing their discomfort. “When we really commit to exploring deeply, we can begin to understand ourselves so much better.”

Identity is more personal than filling out boxes about your gender and ethnicity on a form. After all, knowing that Denis is a Black Male tells you very little about who he actually is. Whether you want to understand yourself better in terms of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, culture, or you don’t even know where to begin, Denis is your guy.

Denis’s own sense of identity has been shaped by several unique life experiences. He was born in Nairobi Kenya and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 5.5 years old. He grew up in West Michigan before going to the U.P. for his undergrad at Northern Michigan University. He has since traveled back to Kenya and Tanzania to visit his family, while also building close connections to his friends and family in Grand Rapids. He even got to experience completing his master’s degree at Western Michigan University during a pandemic.

When he’s not helping people sort their identity out, he’s usually learning something related to cars (seriously, ask him about his dream car and he won’t stop talking). Denis also loves to cook and bake whenever he can, read interesting books, and watch classic movies like Avenger’s Infinity War.
