I have always wanted to do something with my life that would allow me to help others around me, especially when it comes to health. It wasn’t until I started college that I realized I want to be able to make an impact on the way people live their lives and change their lives for the better. I have always been fascinated with the mind and how easily it can be molded by every single experience in our lives. It is amazing to see the life changes that an individual goes through, but it feels even better knowing that you are a part of that development.
I originally moved to the United States from Nepal at the age of four. During my first few years in the United States, living in rural areas, I have witnessed the hardships that families must endure in order to adjust into the culture in a new country and be able to provide for their families. Throughout my childhood and my adolescence, I have been able to experience the different lifestyles of many communities; from rural areas of Chicago, Illinois, to the suburban areas of Omaha, Nebraska, and then to the diversified communities of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Moving from city to city as I grew older has allowed me to understand the different problems that are present in all different communities in all different age groups.
As a counselor, I have been working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relationship conflicts and roadblocks, adults facing life changes, children and adolescents dealing with adjustment and anxiety, trauma, and stress. I have also worked with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, and personality disorders. I have learned from such experiences, that as an individual, we always have a choice to be happier and in a better place. We can’t always control our environment or our life circumstances, but we have the power to control our reactions and have the choice to be happier. I enjoy incorporating practices of play therapy, group work, and artwork, along with talk therapy, to help guide my clients towards their therapeutic goals. I enjoy using solution-focused approaches, as well as cognitive and choice-theory approaches, to guide individuals to a better understanding of their own patterns of thinking and behaviors that cause them to feel “stuck.”
I received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. Mary’s University, in San Antonio, Texas, in 2016 and decided to move back to Dallas to further my career. I believe it it’s important to work on educating members of the diversified communities of Dallas on the importance of taking care of their mind as well as their bodies. I want to work on guiding individuals to learn how to manage their daily life struggles, depression, stress, anxiety, loss, and adjustment. I myself have had to do a lot of self-exploration to find my place as a South Asian American and what that means to me; I want to be able to share and use my experience to help others as well.
When I am not counseling, I love to be doing anything from baking, binge watching Friends on Netflix, finding hole in the wall coffee shops, to traveling the world. I love learning about new cultures and getting to experience the beautiful sights that we have all over the world. The older I get the more countries/cities I want to visit. So far my list is still pretty small, with my most recent adventure being to Iceland. There are so many great things to see and do in the world, and my plan is to slowly see (almost) all of it.
