Depression
Find Your CounselorAbout
Depression has many causes. Sometimes depression can be triggered by a major life event (such as a breakup, losing your job, or making a recent move) or a past trauma (such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, a near-death experience, the loss of a loved one). Other times, depression strikes seemingly without cause and hits hard on the physiological level—according to recent research, our genes play a part in whether or not we will develop depression. Whatever the cause of your depression, one constant holds true: depression, although similar in expression to sadness, is far more severe and enduring. Sadness fades. Unhappiness becomes reclassified as depression when symptoms affect day-to-day functioning for at least two weeks.
Fortunately, depression is often a manageable condition. First, your therapist will ensure your safety, particularly if you think you might be at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else. Then, they will partner with you to identify the source of your depression and develop coping techniques and regulatory skills through a variety of counseling approaches. Depression can feel lonely, but you don’t have to go through it alone!
