Get to know Katie

Katie Smelko is passionate about the beauty that can come from broken places and wants to see you healthy in body, heart, and mind. She believes that all of these aspects contribute to you thriving. By co-creating a safe space for openness, processing, and healing, she will partner with you to identify questions and experiences that may be interfering with your sense of wholeness. She specializes in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, as well as those who deal with issues that are often linked with trauma experiences. These include substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, and personality disorders. She is committed to being with you throughout your healing journey.

Katie is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. This approach is an evidence-based, emotion focused method that provides a foundation for mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance. Katie’s further integrative approach will incorporate elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic approaches, Motivational Interviewing, and faith-based incorporations. Trained in a multifaceted approach during her psychoeducation training at Dallas Theological Seminary, Katie will meet you where you are at in your journey towards health and growth.

A Dallas native, Katie is eager to set some roots in the Oak Cliff community. In her spare time, you can find her drinking a hot cappuccino at Davis Street Espresso, riding her bike around White Rock Lake, or reading a good book. After getting her bachelors degree in Social Work from Texas Christian University, Katie spent several summers guiding and counseling high school kids on backpacking trips in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. She brings elements of this love for adventure and connection into her work as a therapist.
