Get to know Molly
Birds do it, bees do it, but no one really likes to talk about it.
Sex is a delicate and often uncomfortable subject to discuss; Molly understands that and is ready to help you or your family wade into those waters. Molly’s clinical focus is specifically on sexual wellness, sexual/affectional orientation, and gender identity concerns. She is queer and gender-affirming and can work with individuals, couples, families, and groups of all ages but primarily with emerging adults (17-25) and adults (25+) with a wide range of mental health concerns.
Molly uses feminist and person-centered approaches to counseling with an emphasis on the therapeutic relationship. She works to empower clients towards self-direction and optimal wellness, whatever that might mean for them. In addition to traditional talk therapy, Molly also incorporates expressive arts and holistic wellness into her counseling practice.
A lifelong midwesterner, Molly originally hails from Central Illinois. After completing her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, Molly worked on a research team for two years before starting her MA in Community Mental Health Counseling at the University of Toledo in 2011. She knew that her end goal was to teach at the college level so she went straight into a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of Wyoming. Throughout it all, her research and clinical focus has been on empowering and educating folks on all things sex. She works to fight against the stigma that makes it challenging to openly explore questions and concerns related to sexuality, gender, orientation, and identity. In 2017 Molly accepted a position at Aquinas College as Assistant Professor of Counselor Education. Focusing on completing her education and moving between several states in the process has prevented her from completing her full licensure, something she’s excited to do now that she’s more settled in Grand Rapids. While educating and training Master’s students to become highly skilled, ethical, and knowledgeable counselors is very fulfilling, it’s important to her to stay active in the field and is overjoyed to have found a clinic like Lifeologie to get back into working with clients.
Given the choice, Molly would live happily as a hermit in a cabin in the woods, baking pies and tending her garden with a few doggos, full bookshelves, and her partner David by her side. For now, she’s happy to grow her houseplants (and container herb garden in the summer!) and take frequent hikes in the thick woods of Michigan. She’s also a proud D&D player, video gamer, and tv/movie marathon aficionado.
