Get to know Zakiya
Zakiya Futrell is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina. She is a recent alumna of North Carolina State University (go pack!) where she earned her Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in May 2021. Prior to continuing her passion of mental health by gaining her M.Ed, in counseling, Zakiya completed her Bachelors in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2019.
Her love for mental health started her freshman year of high school when she took her first of many psychology courses. While discussing and researching mental health within the African American community she noticed the lack of accessibility and resources surrounding mental health within her community and wanted to utilize her platform to not only advocate and bring awareness to this matter, but to also create change within her community.
Zakiya's Background
This sparked her interest in mental health and motivated her to pursue a career in the field of counseling. Her passion to help her community and those in need continued while she pursued her Master's Degree in Education. She provided both individual and group counseling services to those in the community ranging from teens and older adults. While also conducting counseling services Zakiya has created and facilitated workshops surrounding personal development and stress management with an emphasis on mindfulness within the community.
She strives to ensure her work emphasizes the importance of multiculturalism and cultural identity within an individual. She understands the impact cultural identity has on an individual and makes an effort to acknowledge this with each individual. She values creating a collaborative relationship based on trust where the client feels comfortable, safe, and empowered.
Counseling Approach
Zakiya has experience working with a variety of ages and populations. She is interested in working with late teens, young adults, and older adults. As your counselor, Zakiya utilizes person-centered, cognitive behavioral, and mindfulness approaches within her counseling practice. She specializes in working with clients that may be dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, and stress management.
She also has experience working with individuals that may be experiencing stress related to career development and school related concerns. She is committed to providing outstanding services to all clients. She understands that every client’s journey is unique and she aims to provide each individual with the resources and support needed to excel at their own personal growth.
She values the relationship between herself and the client and feels that creating a collaborative relationship based on mutual trust and respect is a priority with each client. She hopes to create a space for all to feel, embrace, and explore. Her compassion for others continues to motivate her everyday to create the necessary change in the world.
She truly believes that; “Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you are going..” -Noam Shpancer.
She hopes that she is able to be a passenger on this journey with you!
