Life Transitions
Find Your CounselorAbout
Significant life events happen to everyone. Marriage, starting a family, starting a new job, getting a promotion, or retiring can fill us with joy as well as trepidation. Less welcome events, such as divorce, death of a loved one, experiencing a loss, getting laid off, or receiving a life-changing diagnosis can fill us with sadness, anger, and fear. Changes in family dynamics, like blending families or relocating an aging parent, can unmoor us from familiar routines. And one of the most stressful life events is something we often daydream about: moving! A 2024 survey found that many Americans said moving was more overwhelming than losing a job (27%) or switching careers (23%).
The good news about life transitions is that, though challenging, they can serve as a catalyst for personal growth, enhancing maturity, problem-solving skills, and resilience. However, if stress becomes too intense or prolonged, it can diminish joy, confidence, and wellbeing, leading to insecurity, anxiety, adjustment disorder, or just feeling paralyzed, unsure how to move forward.
We are not born with the tools to adjust to major life transitions, but we can acquire them. Working with a therapist who specializes in mindfulness, meditation. cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a great way to learn coping skills, manage stress, set boundaries, and thrive in the face of change.
