About
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is a form of talk therapy that is especially suited for people who experience intense negative feelings or have difficulty regulating their emotions.
The word “dialectical” in DBT means working with two opposing forces: acceptance and change. Counselors work with clients to help them accept and validate their own feelings and emotions but also help them to change or replace their unhelpful behaviors if those tendencies are preventing them from achieving their life goals, such as developing healthy relationships.
DBT is most effective in people who are ready to do the work of making positive changes and focusing on their present and their future rather than perseverating on their past. Many studies have shown it is especially effective in treating borderline personality disorder, and counselors are also finding it helps those with suicidal thoughts.
Specially trained therapists use DBT in one-on-one sessions as well as in groups. Unlike a support group where members share their own experiences, however, DBT groups are designed to teach a set of skills over several sessions in a workshop or classroom setting. Exercises (such as increasing tolerance to stressful triggers) can be uncomfortable, but the sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that those uncomfortable feelings don’t last forever can lead to tremendous confidence and growth.
