Postpartum Depression
Find Your CounselorAbout
Postpartum depression is NOT BABY BLUES. The baby blues do exist! They impact about 70-80% of new moms. This can look like crying and feelings of being overwhelmed with new motherhood. It is a normal response and can last anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. However, if you are experiencing symptoms for longer than 2 weeks, it may be time to seek professional help.
ALSO: 1 in 10 dads have postpartum depression. When we hear “postpartum depression,” we often think of mothers, but dads suffer from this as well. It is likely this number is higher, however, as dads are not reporting their symptoms because (1) they may not recognize their symptoms as “symptoms” and (2) doctors aren’t asking.
Postpartum depression impacts up to 20% of mothers. Mothers are generally only seen at their 6 week follow up OB appointment and often do not disclose symptoms if they are experiencing them. If they do disclose them, they may simply be given a prescription, like Zoloft, and are not referred for further treatment, like therapy. Beginning a new family is exciting but also incredibly stressful; good changes count as stressors, too! Counseling for postpartum depression can help new mothers address their very valid emotional response to motherhood, develop coping skills for the months ahead, and refine a personal resiliency.
