What’s the difference between being a nice, thoughtful person and a codependent person? Motivation, primarily. Motivation is the cut-off point—particularly in the context of social, romantic, and family relationships. Simply put, codependency is broadly recognized as excessive caretaking, and is marked by constant anxiety and worry about other people’s states of being, contagious moods (feeling as if “your problems are my problems”), and a relentless drive to take responsibility for things over which you have no control.
Codependency is a tough pattern to break, perhaps because these patterns take root in an individual during life’s earliest stages. Though recovery can be a long road, individuals with codependency can and do recover over time. You can’t undo a lifetime of codependent thoughts and behaviors overnight, but with dedication and grit, you can redirect codependent thoughts towards investing in healthy, sustainable relationships.
