Couples counseling has an average success rate of 70%, yet only half of couples in distress seek counseling. Fear of failure, fear of being shamed, feeling that a relationship’s problems are too big to address or small enough to handle on their own, or simply not knowing what is involved beyond talking about your problems – again – can inhibit people from seeking help.
Partners in stressful relationships are more likely to suffer from anxiety, mood disorders, or substance abuse. Recent studies show their children are also much more likely to struggle with mental and physical health problems, as well as poor academic performance.
Couples therapists begin by identifying core areas of conflict and finding ways to reduce relationship distress. Their role is not to assign blame, excuse past behavior, or choose an adversary. It is crucial to find a counselor that specializes in an approach that fits a couple’s lifestyle and in which both partners are willing to engage, whether that is emotionally-focused therapy that helps partners understand triggers and responses, infidelity recovery to rebuild trust, Christian counseling that relies on a Biblical foundation, or one of many other approaches designed to build communication and strengthen relationships. Many counselors offer sliding scales and telehealth, making couples and marriage counseling accessible and affordable.
More than 90% of those who go through couples counseling say they gained effective new tools and understanding for managing their problems at home.
