Sandra Burton is a dedicated and compassionate intern on the verge of becoming a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC). With deep roots in Shreveport, Sandra is committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of her community.  She has more than 18 years experience working with diverse clients to address a wide range of issues, including co-occurring disorders, substance abuse and addictions, behavioral disorders, trauma, and psychosis

Sandra's journey began at Southern University in Baton Rouge, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She then pursued a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology with a Specialization in Forensic Counseling. Currently, she is completing additional courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.

Sandra's upbringing in Shreveport was marked by active participation in church, community, and school activities. Her dedication to community service is reflected in her extensive involvement with various organizations and programs throughout her career. 

Career highlights include:

Case Manager at AMI Kids: Worked with at-risk youth, providing initial assessments, group therapy sessions, aftercare, and discharge planning. Her efforts helped many young individuals avoid incarceration and improve their life trajectories.

Director of Treatment at AMI Kids: Supervised and provided individual and family counseling, recognizing the importance of strong community relationships for supporting at-risk youth and their families.

Lead Family Therapist at the Department of Corrections: Facilitated weekly group sessions using the Strengthening Families evidence-based curriculum, aiming to break generational cycles and help offenders and their families develop better parenting techniques.

Special Programs and Initiatives

Sandra has been instrumental in several key programs: 

Strengthening Families Program: Organized Family Day events to help offenders and their families initiate the healing process before release.

Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program: Played a pivotal role in opiate addiction treatment, receiving training on Vivitrol Injection.

Personal Interests

Outside of her professional life, Sandra enjoys cooking, and sees food as a universal language that brings people together. She also loves spending time with her teenage son, shopping, decorating, fashion, traveling, listening to music, going to the movies, and binge watching her favorite TV shows.
