Get to know Kaitlin
Raleigh therapist Kaitlin Duren helps her clients discover healthier perceptions of themselves and strengthen their interpersonal relationships. She is particularly interested in working with couples and LGBTQ+ individuals. She has experience working with monogamous, ethically non-monogamous, and polyamorous couples and addressing the unique needs of these dynamics. She has also worked with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), trauma, neurodiversity (ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder), life transitions, relationship issues, gender and sexuality, and identity formation.
Working within the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, Kaitlin helps clients identify their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and develop a personalized toolkit of coping strategies to utilize in changing their behaviors. She is also trained in EMDR, an approach that facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and other adverse life experiences to bring them to an adaptive resolution. EMDR is often used to treat PTSD or other traumas, but can also help reduce symptoms of anxiety, OCD, depression, and other mental health challenges. She also utilizes Attachment-Based and neuroaffirming approaches when working with individuals and couples.
Kaitlyn received her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Carolina State University and completed extensive EMDR training with the EMDR International Association.
As a queer-identified person, Kaitlin is passionate about working with this population and providing a safe and affirming space. She works with clients to address personal, emotional, professional, environmental, systematic, and relational stressors. Her primary approach to counseling is an integration of cognitive-behavioral, EMDR, and somatic approaches. She believes that thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected, and increasing the mind-body connection is essential to my counseling process. This allows the client and counselor to develop an empathic and nonjudgmental relationship to improve one's well-being. The therapeutic relationship is a partnership, and her role is to get a better understanding of how you approach life and how that approach helps or hinders goals you hope to achieve.
During her free time, Kaitlin enjoys reading, listening to her vinyl collection, and spending time with her fiancée and friends. She is often taking care of her houseplants or binge-watching a new reality TV series. She also loves to travel, has been to 40 states and 5 countries and hopes to continue to experience new places and cultures.
