Get to know Mei

Mei (pronounced MAY) was born to two physicians in Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan.  Raised by her grandmother in Chengdu while her parents worked in the very harsh environment of the Tibetan plateaus, she observed first hand the close-knit but badly enmeshed dynamics of families typical in Asian cultures.  At a young age, she learned to navigate the tension that came from relationships spanning across multiple generations.

She taught English at a middle school and led the human resource department of a new joint venture entertainment company before coming to the U.S., where she obtained her MS degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Missouri - St. Louis.  Her career spanned from an inside sales rep at a cosmetic manufacturer to computer programmer and analyst, but she would say that her most challenging job was parenting in a dual culture home.

It was while working as a computer programmer that Mei’s passion to serve people at a deeper level was realized.  After experiencing the great benefits from counseling during her son’s turbulent adolescence, the conflicts in her cross-cultural marriage, her own depression, fibromyalgia, and other chronic health issues, she returned to school and received a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Mei holds a whole-person view and utilizes a holistic approach – she believes all aspects of a person, biological, emotional, psychological, spiritual and relational, are all inter-connected and impact each other.  Her therapeutic approach is tailored to each individual’s overall situation and specific needs and goals.

Mei is grateful for and loved the rigorous biblical and theological training at DTS.  Besides her specialties in depression and anxiety, cross-cultural and cross-generational counseling, she enjoys providing faith-based counseling too, incorporating biblical perspective and inspiration and dealing with doubts and other spiritual challenges.  She also serves part-time as an in-house counselor at Dallas Chinese Bible Church. Mei can counsel in both 中文(國語) Mandarin and English.

In her spare time, Mei volunteers at Real Options, a non-profit empowering clients to make informed choices when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, and Someone Cares, a ministry for post-abortion restoration.  For respite, she loves exploring the woods and listening to the sounds of nature, especially where there is water.  She recently discovered and fell in love with the Aussie band, Sons of Korah, and also enjoys eating with friends—especially around a Sichuan hotpot!
