Get to know Sonya
Sonya is a native East Texan, the oldest of her siblings, and the mother of five children. Her transition into adulthood became an unhealthy byproduct of learned behavior from her own family of origin. Being very grounded in her faith, she knew when she and her husband of 22 years married navigating a healthy, blended family would require learning to do things differently. This meant building effective co-parenting skills and healthy interactions.
She earned her Bachelor of Science from Midwestern State University and has served patients at the bedside for over 20 years. During this time, she worked with those in trauma, parents experiencing the NICU, home healthcare and family advocacy in organ procurement and transplantation for those making end of life decisions. Her work has afforded her the opportunity to assist individuals and families from many different backgrounds and cultures. Through her experiences Sonya’s passion for people led her to pursue a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Texas Woman’s University where she is currently completing her internship.
Sonya brings an existential approach to therapy as she passionately believes that while we may not be able to control our circumstances, we can control how we respond to them. Her desire is to meet individuals and families where they are at, validate the reality of their present and focus on the hope of their future by helping them discover all they were meant to be in the uniqueness only they possess. Her primary focus is working through grief and bereavement, couples therapy, life transitions, religious/spiritual exploration, and family systems to positively impact the legacy of our family trees.
As empty nesters when not working, Sonya and her husband spend time cruising, enjoying any activity that involves the sun and water, or loyally cheering on their college football team. No matter the season Sonya strives to live by the philosophy that we have the opportunity each day to leave others better than we found them.
