Get to know Laye

Laye believes counseling is a valuable process in which individuals can achieve the quality of life they desire through a guided, non-judgmental, and authentic client-therapist relationship. This process can be challenging yet rewarding as it provides you the client the opportunity to discover, resolve, and become aware of issues that may be influencing your quality of life. The first step towards developing this therapist-client relationship is for you to be fully aware of his qualifications, areas of experience, as well as details about the counseling process and your rights as a client. This information is intended to help you decide if his services are suitable for your needs at this time and are provided in accordance with the standards of practice of the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors.

Laye received a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counseling, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University. He is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA).

In his approach, he views counseling as a journey, in which an individual serves as his or her own agent of change. Laye believes we all have problems and distractions in our lives that can distort our vision of who we are and what we desire. This is a collaborative process that thrives on open and honest self-disclosure in order to reach the root of the issue that is concerning you. He has seen the power of the human spirit and its resilience when faced with trials and tribulations. Laye understands that trust plays a crucial role in this process. As a counselor, he feels privileged to be able to listen to your issues and concerns. He applauds your courage in taking a step towards making changes in your life and becoming “unstuck”.

Laye believes in his clients set their own pace in order to create a level of comfort that puts them in the driver's seat. It is important that you feel comfortable and not rushed to experience emotions or changes that you are not yet ready for. His role in this collaborative process becomes that of a blank canvas that allows you as the client to paint your vision of where life has taken you and whatever issues are holding you back from living the life that you desire.

This is a journey that may be uncomfortable at times due to the reawakening of repressed and sometimes forgotten thoughts and emotions. Helping you resolve your pressing issues and concerns may require more than one session so he encourages his clients to keep a clear line of communication, so he can better understand the issues and their impact on them. Laye’s therapeutic approach encompasses Person-Centered Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. He believes our thoughts, emotions, relationships, and upbringing have a great influence on how we live our life. As a therapist, Laye looks at both internal and external stressors to better understand and serve his clients. He works with his clients to come up with an agenda that addresses their needs and concerns in a manner that respects their cultural, ethnic, gender, and religious orientation. He believes we all have burdens that we carry so as your counselor, Laye wants to help you develop coping skills and empower you to ease those burdens, so you may be at peace and thrive emotionally and psychologically.
