Get to know Mekayla

Mekayla grew up as someone very passionate about helping others. She had also always loved theater and found it was a great way to better understand others and herself by identifying a character’s motivations, what emotions were driving them, and how their experiences shaped their world view differently from her own. She found that what she was learning as an actor was applicable to her experiences with friends and students who came to her asking to be listened to and understood as they worked through complex emotions and dealt with life’s struggles. She eventually decided to pursue a career in counseling to better learn and be able to help those in her community.

Mekayla has recently graduated from North Carolina Central University finishing up her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During her time in the program, she worked with Lifeologie as a Counseling Intern. For undergrad she attended Lees-McRae College in the mountains of North Carolina where she ran in Track & Field while attaining a B.S. in Psychology as well as a B.S. in Performing Arts Studies. There she spent 3 years partnered with the Counseling center as a peer ally in a role meant to help young adults transition emotionally and academically into college as smoothly as possible. Mekayla also spent her senior year of high school living on campus at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts as a student in their acting program. She has previous experience working in children’s theater teaching classes and directing performances. In this role she enjoyed helping children and teens step into their own confidence and learn how to connect with others through character work, collaboration, and self-exploration.

Mekayla uses a multi-modal approach that tends to encompass Person-Centered Therapy along with Existential Therapy, Attachment Therapy, and other influences tailored to each individual client’s needs. She is trained to help people from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Her focus is on the client’s overall wellness and giving them the tools they need to live their best quality of life.

In Mekayla’s family both her father and her brother are on the autism spectrum. Growing up seeing many of the obstacles faced by those in this community has made her aware of many of the resources lacking for individuals on the spectrum, particularly when it comes to adults. Mekayla works to be a therapist who is culturally competent when it comes to the lived experiences of autistic teens and adults who are seeking support.

Mekayla believes that at times therapy can be tough work requiring patience and dedication, but she also finds as humans we are resilient creatures and there is always a place for humor and joy in our lives and the therapeutic experience is no different. She hopes to make your shared sessions together a connected, safe, and overall meaningful experience.

During her free time Mekayla enjoys going hiking, particularly in the mountains, with her partner and her sweet dog Phoebe. When at home she can often be found playing video games while snuggled up with her equally as sweet cat, Keiko. She also enjoys rock climbing, gardening, and playing board games with her friends.
