Do You Need a Human or an AI Therapist?

Do You Need a Human or an AI Therapist?
6:21

At Lifeologie Counseling, we're 100% staffed with humans who believe in supporting other humans, warts and all. We're also licensed professional therapists and experts in our field who are continually learning new counseling approaches and deepening our understanding of how clients communicate – verbally and nonverbally.

In an era where artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing into every aspect of our lives, including mental health care, it's crucial to understand what you're gaining—and potentially losing—when you choose between human and AI-powered therapy options.

AI Therapy: Rise of the Robots

AI therapy chatbots have exploded in popularity, promising convenient, accessible mental health support at the touch of a button. Why not use digital tools that offer 24/7 availability, reduced costs, and the alluring appeal of anonymity? They’re often free or available with a monthly subscription that usually costs less than the average copay.

But here’s where we need to talk about the counseling that tools like Abby and AI Therapist provide. AI is designed to give you what you want. Not necessarily what you need. Validation that your partner is a jerk and you’re a victim of their insensitive behavior? Check. Insightful questions about your childhood that may indicate unhealthy patterns you developed as coping strategies and are still using despite not finding satisfaction in your adult relationships? Possibly. Noticing that you haven’t washed your hair in two weeks, your shirt is covered in food stains, you’re avoiding eye contact, and you can’t stop fidgeting? Those are just a few of the details a professional therapist is trained to notice that a bot isn’t designed to detect.

Some of the AI therapy tools that initially showed promise in reducing symptoms of depression, such as the Stanford-designed Woebot, have never been compared to human counterparts, only control groups that were assigned self-help materials they could read on their own – leaving questions unanswered about the true effectiveness of AI versus human intervention.

hermeneutics: the human touch in mental health

Experienced therapists know that to be safe and effective, therapy requires sophisticated clinical judgment, the ability to conduct thorough inquiry before offering guidance, and immediate crisis intervention capabilities. One of the tools clinical therapists use is hermeneutics – a big word for the small art of interpretation. In therapy, it’s not about reading ancient texts (though that’s where the word comes from), but about really listening and digging into what your experiences mean to you.

When therapists use hermeneutics, they’re not just hearing what you say—they’re exploring how you say it, the emotions behind it, and the personal or cultural stories shaping it. For example, if you say, “I have to be perfect,” a therapist might gently explore where that belief came from: Was it a family expectation? A school experience? A personal value? Together, you can uncover history and layers of meaning beneath the surface.

AI systems may provide directive advice without sufficient understanding. Human therapists take the time to truly listen, ask meaningful questions, and develop deep understanding before they begin offering guidance. A human therapist isn’t trained to give you answers—they’re skilled in helping you interpret your own life story in a way that helps you evolve, understand, heal, and grow.

Licensed professional therapists are trained to synthesize complex and varied cues coming in on multiple levels—something that requires years of education, supervised practice, and ongoing professional development. We also understand that healing happens through genuine human connection that can adapt to what each client needs.

Bots may notice that you haven’t logged in. Therapists will remember you mentioned canceling because of a daughter’s graduation – and they’ll reach out to make sure you’re doing ok.

If you’re interested in seeing how AI therapy bots work, feel free to explore. Perhaps you just need a motivational message every morning! But remember the therapeutic relationship you build with a therapist is built on trust, empathy, and genuine human connection, which is critical for vulnerable populations who need the nuanced understanding only human therapists can provide.
