Get to know Caleb

Caleb Waters is a counselor intern earning his Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Carolina Central University in Durham. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in broadcast journalism, he spent seven years working in sports TV production. Now, he wants to use his passion for storytelling to help clients rewrite their own stories.

Caleb works with adolescents (13+) and adults in all stages of life, as well as couples at Lifeologie Counseling Durham. He is passionate about working with clients of all backgrounds and identities who are dealing with many different issues, including anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and more.

Caleb believes that counseling should embody a professional relationship, seamlessly blending the technical qualities of skill, theory, punctuality, and organization with the relational aspects of non-judgment, empathy, and unconditional positive regard for the client. He views the counselor’s role not as pushing or pulling the client but instead as accompanying and walking alongside them.

Caleb's counseling/theoretical interests include Psychodynamic, Existential, Narrative, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, all viewed through a Person-Centered lens. Above all, he believes that the counseling approach should be driven by what is best for the client.

Regardless of identity, everyone faces unique challenges that leave them feeling weak, embarrassed, ashamed, and isolated. These challenges, however, are simply a product of being human, a guarantee of both good days and bad days to come. When faced with these difficulties himself, Caleb aspires to live by the words of Pat Tillman: “Love, laughter, and joy, as well as pain, longing and sorrow, are all part of the ride. Without the latter you cannot truly appreciate the former, cannot come to understand just how much you truly care... I want to feel, experience, and live every emotion. I will suffer through the bad for the heights of the good.”

Outside of his work at Lifeologie, Caleb can be found on a running trail, avidly supporting Everton Football Club, watching the newest movie or stand-up comedy special, or spending time with his wife, son, family, and friends. He is excited for and honored by the chance to be a part of an individual or couple’s pursuit of health and wellness.
