Get to know Roland
Therapist Roland “Genjo” Williams is passionate about providing compassionate care for adolescents, adults, and relationships of all kinds. Genjo sees folks online and in-person at Lifeologie Counseling Durham. He prioritizes his clients’ agency, inner knowing, and joy as a force of freedom and healing. He offers sessions in English and Japanese.
Genjo provides empowering, relational, trauma-informed counseling for teens, young adults, LGBTQIA+ folks, the BIPOC community, and relationships of all varieties, including friendships, polycules, and non-monogamous relationships. He also supports clients navigating grief, death, loss, anxiety, social identity exploration, depression, as well as those exploring spirituality and religion.
He believes that in a supportive, curious environment, everyone’s innate healing ability can be activated and engaged. Sessions are tailored for each client, and may include mindfulness, here-and-now process work, embodiment, relational feedback, depth and dream work, and playfulness. He brings more than a decade of experience working in a variety of mental health settings, including therapeutic boarding schools, universities, and wilderness therapy.
Genjo’s practice is rooted in Liberation Psychology and Relational-Cultural Theory. He understands that each individual is part of an interconnected web of relationships, community, family, society, and culture, all of which influence a person’s wellbeing, worldview, values, and sense of self. Paying attention to systemic and societal forces, family of origin, ancestry, and a person’s experiences of connection and disconnection, Genjo helps clients work toward their best, most joyful, and most purposeful lives.
He received his Bachelor’s in Biology with a minor in Japanese from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and earned his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lenoir-Rhyne University. He has also trained at Zen monasteries and temples in Japan and the United States as a practice of deepening his understanding of community, mindfulness, wellbeing, and the mind-body connection. He has practiced meditation and mindfulness since 2011 and continues to sit regularly in community and on retreats.
Outside of work, Genjo enjoys hiking with his friends and dog, Kiku, practicing aikido, watching anime, and resting and napping (“rest is resistance” in the words of The Nap Bishop, Tricia Hersey). He also loves to lounge and read, especially sci-fi, haiku, liberation philosophies, esotericism, and fantasy. He’s looking forward to healing and thriving together with you!
