Get to know Marissa

If your tween (9-12) or teen (13-18) is having a hard time with… well life, Marissa Caton (previously Wilson) is here for your family! Marissa loves to work with tweens, teens, and families to help manage sticky situations like anxiety or depression, help with navigating relationships, managing stress, understanding big life changes, and much more.

Helping Teens and Tweens with Self-Development

Marissa loves working with teens because she always gets to know the latest text abbreviation… but really because she believes that this is a pivotal point in self-development and thinks it’s an awesome time to learn more about yourself. As an added bonus, she like totally GETS Snapchat and Instagram, and speaks fluently in “Tween.”

Marissa believes that every person (and tween/teen) already has what they need to heal, but sometimes our “okay-ness” gets stuck under layers of self-protection and hurt. Marissa believes that therapy is a collaborative process that involves peeling back the layers that help protect you, to remove what no longer serves you, so you can get to your true authentic self.

A Counselor to Connect Mind and Body

Marissa was born in Bay City, Michigan and then raised mostly in Kalamazoo. She began attending Grand Valley State University with the intent of becoming a nutritionist. She quickly realized that she was more interested in the impact of food on people and their communities, rather than the biology and chemistry of food. She changed her major to social work and never looked back. Her mom has been taking her to yoga classes for as long as she can remember. To this, she credits her life-long interest in the connection between the mind and body. Marissa began to notice that what happens in someone’s brain often shows up in their body. After graduate school, she thought it would be a good idea to go back to school and complete a yoga teacher training. Marissa now incorporates yoga techniques into therapy and LOVES it.

Marissa loves practicing yoga, spending time with her cat, enjoying a cup of coffee in front of a body of water, and connecting with others.

PS – although she’ll never admit it to you, she’s the kindest human being on. the. planet. Spend ten minutes with her, and you’ll feel like you just met an old friend.
