Get to know Angelica

Angelica is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Angelica was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina and after marrying her husband, who serves in the military, relocated to Jacksonville, North Carolina. Angelica graduated with her BS in Psychology from the College of Charleston and has always had a passion for working with children and adolescents. While not working towards her undergraduate degree, she was a staff member at an elementary school after-school program. Her experience working directly with children helped her see the importance of allowing children to express themselves, verbally, and through play.

Angelica continued her work at the school following graduation and, after the passing of her father a few months later, she realized what career route she wanted to take. Having grown up in a family that rarely spoke about their emotions, it made it difficult to process the crisis. Luckily, being close to both of her sisters, this made the situation more manageable. After checking on her younger sister to see how she had been dealing with things, her sister briefly mentioned how helpful the school guidance counselor was. It was then that Angelica began to research the field of counseling and ultimately determined that she wanted to help others process, understand, and manage their emotions.

Angelica enrolled in the counseling program at Wake Forest University and graduated with her MA in Counseling in 2017. Her graduate internship experience included a practicum and internship at a child advocacy center where she completed trauma screenings to gain an understanding of a child’s trauma history and determine appropriate referrals to best benefit a child, facilitated and co-facilitated individual therapy sessions using components of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and provided psychoeducation to parents and children for the purpose of teaching body safety and proper boundaries. Upon earning her MA in Counseling, Angelica began working as an acute clinician at an acute psychiatric hospital. There, she managed a caseload of 10-15 patients and provided therapeutic services primarily to children, adolescents, and teens in crisis. She communicated with supports of patients and was part of a treatment team that determined the appropriate aftercare recommendations for patients upon their discharge. She also completed individual, family, and group therapy sessions regularly utilizing components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing for the purpose of helping patients understand and manage their emotions and stress, developing short-term goals and assisting patients in determining how to best achieve their goals.

Angelica’s specialties and professional interests include crisis & trauma, managing stress, depression, and anxiety, and helping those dealing with adjustment issues. She enjoys working with all age groups - children, adolescents, teens, and adults. Angelica enjoys helping others develop strategies to use to help better manage stress, depression, and anxiety.

She uses a variety of theories when working with individuals, including Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. Angelica believes in providing empathy and a judgment-free atmosphere to help build rapport with clients. She believes in facing problems with clients and listening in order to understand what clients’ specific needs are in order to help them navigate through their problems and improve their mental wellness.

In her free time, Angelica enjoys spending time with her husband, two kids, and their dog. Being part of a military family, it is sometimes difficult to visit with family and friends. When able, she enjoys spending long weekends and holiday breaks in her hometown. She self-cares through running, gardening/taking care of house plants, reading, and binge-watching different series on Netflix. Angelica also enjoys traveling, eating her way through different cities, and learning about different cultures.
