Get to know Rashad

Rashad Smith specializes in working with couples, families, adults, and teens working through problems they may be facing in each season of life, such as anxiety, depression, grief, career counseling, and emotional regulation. As a former athlete and teacher, he especially enjoys working with athletes and students of every age whether it be performance pressures, determining plans for when you retire, and even figuring out how to navigate problems at school. Rashad helps people better understand who they are, where they are stuck, and how they can move forward in a healthy way by challenging unhealthy thoughts and behaviors and providing new perspectives. Being able to just talk freely without judgment is what you can expect in his sessions.

Rashad earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Tulsa and his Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the Chicago School. As a young boy living in Queens, New York,  his first memory of traumatic experience happened on September 11, 2001. His mother worked in the city and survived the 9/11 attacks. The trauma it caused followed them afterwards and they relocated often. Experiencing that up close created a curiosity in Rashad to understand how traumatic events can follow you long after the event itself. Moving around allowed Rashad the lucky experiences of forming relationships with many different people. The world has truly been his teacher and these experiences led him  to become a therapist. Forming relationships with people from many different ages, ethnicities, professions, etc. equipped him with the skills to talk with just about anyone. He has experienced lots of wins and losses, and knows firsthand how challenging being a human being is.

He enjoys living in the city around a little chaos and among diverse populations. He played college basketball and sports remain a vital part of his life. He also enjoys riding his longboard as a form of meditation.
