Get to know Nishi

Nishi Gupta, MSW, LCSW (she/her) is a clinical psychotherapist, working in a large private practice for the past five years in Durham, NC. Nishi has worked individually with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, family of origin issues, identity, grief, addictive behaviors, and trauma. Nishi is interested in the significance of formative relationships, internal conflicts, developmental tasks, and better understanding how defenses protect us. Nishi began studying with the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and in 2015-2016, she was a Raft Fellow at PCC.  She also draws from other therapeutic perspectives and has certifications in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction from UNC Integrative Health Care, Dialectical Behavior Therapy from Triangle Area DBT.

Born and raised in Canada, a first generation Indo Canadian and a dual National (Canada and UK), Nishi first became interested in mental health whilst studying Psychology at McMaster University in Ontario Canada, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She then went on to pursue her Masters in Social Work from Royal Holloway University of London, in the UK. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Counseling.

She has over a decade of experience working as a psychiatric social worker in the community in inner London, UK as well as working with adolescents and young adults experiencing first-time psychosis.

Having lived abroad for most all her adult life, she has had to adapt to changing circumstances, overcoming cultural and linguistic barriers. Being of Indian descent, she is especially interested in matters of cross-cultural conflict, racial identity, displacement and cultural adjustment. She operates from a client-centered perspective, striving to build a therapeutic alliance with each individual. She brings to her work a genuine culturally sensitive approach.

Whilst it can be painful to deal with losses, to revisit traumas, and to even know ourselves, in the context of a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, it becomes possible to embark on this journey, to create a full and richly meaningful life.  She is curious and compassionate, trustworthy, and empathically attuned to your mental life.  She will work to help you move towards greater resilience, wholeness, and connection to yourself and others, away from debilitating symptoms and self-defeating patterns. She welcomes clients of diverse racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual identities, as well as those of any religious or spiritual affiliation.

When not working, she loves traveling, trying out new recipes, hiking and spending time with her family and beloved labradoodle, Shiva.

Nishi speaks functional French and Punjabi.
