Get to know Karen

Karen Reeder is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Supervisor. Karen was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended both undergraduate and graduate school at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. For the past 12 years, Karen has been providing clinical services within a local community-based agency.

Karen's clinical and administrative experience includes working with all age groups from 3 years to older adults including serving adolescents with significant mental health needs and concerns. Karen has also received a significant amount of post-graduate training on dual diagnosis treatment, motivational interviewing, clinical supervision, play therapy, trauma-informed care, and professional leadership development.  She is a Certified Family Life Educator and Board-Certified Tele Mental Health Provider (BC-TMHP).  Karen is licensed in North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia and can provide counseling to anyone in those states.

Karen believes that her clients are best served through a team approach, and often collaborates with other providers (Primary Care Physician, Psychiatrist, School Staff, etc.) when and if needed for the optimization of treatment outcomes. She uses a variety of theories including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. Karen engages children and young adults often in various play therapy modalities including client-centered play therapy, direct and nondirective work, and sensory play. As a Registered Play Therapist, Karen has expertise in providing preschool and school-aged children an opportunity to benefit from play therapy interventions. Karen believes that therapy is a journey and will talk with you/your child specifically about interventions and homework assignments given.

In her free time, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters, family, and friends. She enjoys traveling, spending time at the beach, and baking. Frequent trips to Target are usually a plus!
