You’ve decided to take a big step in your life- having a child! A lot of factors go into making this decision, but once it’s made, you are ready to begin. Except it hasn’t been going quite like you expected…
Infertility encompasses many things: trouble conceiving, miscarriages, physical diagnoses that may be contributing to your struggles or difficult discussions with your partner if they are the one struggling with infertility. Whatever it looks like for you, it’s hard. But it’s also more common than you may think. According to the CDC, about 20% of women will experience infertility (defined as more than a year of unprotected sex with no conceptions) in their lives. According to Mayo Clinic, about 10-20% of known pregnancy result in a miscarriage, and these are only the reported occurrences; many miscarriages happen before a person even knows they are pregnant.
What you may have always envisioned as a breezy process can become a daunting challenge in the unknown territory full of physicians, tests, and consultations. Establishing a relationship with a counselor can help you address conflicting and changing feelings, develop coping mechanisms as you tackle tough topics, and hone a personal resiliency as you navigate internal and external obstacles.
